Miki and I (with many thanks to Richard) made the trip to the Opera House to watch Eva Yerbabuena Ballet Flamenco.

We had excellent seats near the stage and fortunately the people in front of us never arrived thus providing uninterrupted views of the dancers. And what dancers they were! My knowledge of any dancing other than 2-stepping and shuffling in large masses of people is quite limited but that aside the performance was excellent. At first I thought that the pieces were lacking energy and verve (perhaps the ballet component?), however this impression did change when the three male dancers began the first high-energy choreography of the night. This was followed by excellent acts by Eva in solo form, three other women performers and various combinations dancing up a storm.

Humorously (or not depending on your perspective) in one routine where the women were dancing with fans one performer dropped hers! At first I thought this was part of the performance but this was dispelled when the others kept their fans. Nonetheless, they all handled the mishap with aplomb and I never saw a “oh no!” expression. Although I imagine back stage she’ll get a talking to. Speaking of handling situations well. There is more praise for the women who had to cope with massive sprays of sweat from the male dancers every time they spun – like that Lynx ad or a sprinkler system.

Honestly, I had feared falling asleep during it and luckily this didn’t happen, thanks to the energy and drama of the performance which made it a worthwhile and fun experience.

Read The Australian or The Sydney Morning Herald’s reviews.

After Flamenco, Miki and I drank at the Opera Bar looking out over the harbour (despite the occasional showers) before watching some of the tennis on the large screen on the forecourt. Lastly, ice cream and wandering through the Rocks and back into the city ended off a fun and entertaining evening.

Who would have thought all of that after having McDonald’s for dinner?

  1. Ooooh crap – I forgot about that! I better hurry and see if tickets are still available. Thanks for the review.
